March 2024 walk

March 2024 walk

The March walks from The Black Horse at Aylestone were led by Allen and Irene. Leaving the pub we turned right and headed round to the Grand Union Canal. After crossing the bridge we turned right onto the towpath and followed it towards the city. On the way passing Canal Street Bridge, Aylestone Mill Lock, and the bridge (which is accessed from Aylestone Road by Mr Tyre Ltd).

Continuing on our way we passed the rear of Aldi and the site of the Gas Holder Tank before reaching St. Mary's Mills Lock. When we arrived at the bridge carrying the Ivanhoe Mineral Line we split into two groups. Irene took the smaller group left up to the Great Central Way which they followed back to the pub. The remainder continued passing the Weir at Freeman's Lock and the King Power Stadium before reaching The Mile Straight. On reaching Mill Lane Bridge we left the towpath crossing into Bede Park where we had our break.

Leaving the park next to the River Soar we followed the path crossing Upperton Road onto the Great Central Way. Following the GCW back to Aylestone we crossed over Middleton Street and on reaching some wooden steps on our left we descended into Riverside Drive.  At this point it started to rain so instead of a twenty minute add-on, we turned right into Narrow Lane to reach the pub and joined the short walkers for our lunch.

We are still in need of a volunteer for the November walk.
